Sometimes, you can pass by the same place a thousand times and still never truly see it—because it wasn’t the right moment.

But when the timing is right, just one visit can stay with you for a lifetime.

Over the past eight years, I’ve visited Urahoro more than five times as a traveler. Last year, I decided to move here.

Even after visiting so many times, I discovered many of Urahoro’s hidden gems only after moving here — through recommendations from local residents, or simply while showing friends around town.

I hope that, as you read this article, this will be the right moment for you to discover a different side of Urahoro — the kind of scenery you won’t find in a typical travel guide.

And remember… don’t tell too many people about these places! 😉

Urahoro Shrine〔Google Maps〕

Urahoro Shrine has a history of more than 130 years and is especially known for Chichigami Shrine, which is believed to bring blessings for breast health, safe childbirth, and abundant breast milk.

The shrine grounds are spacious, and there is much more to explore beyond Chichigami Shrine. You’ll also find a small shrine dedicated to safe travels, which is particularly popular among cyclists and motorcycle riders who make a special trip here to pray for a safe journey home.

There are also smaller shrines where you can pray for success in your career and good relationships.

Kobukariishi Observatory Deck〔Google Maps〕

If you love the ocean, I highly recommend visiting Kobukariishi Observatory deck from spring through autumn for a picnic!

Sit on the grass, listen to the sound of waves and birdsong, enjoy a drink, and watch the sun goes down over the Pacific Ocean. It’s a wonderfully peaceful way to spend an afternoon.

The night sky is also spectacular, so if you have the chance, stay until after sunset. Just be careful when driving, as there are almost no streetlights along the road.

If you’re into outdoor activities, paragliding is available here from April to October, offering incredible views of the Pacific Ocean from above. Reservations are required, and the experience is currently available in Japanese only.〔Google Maps〕

A little extra...

Near the observatory, in an area called Tokachibuto〔Google Maps〕, you’ll find a lagoon.

You won’t hear the waves of the open ocean here. Instead, the calm waters create a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for a quiet stroll.

Urahoro Coal Mine Ruins(Currently closed to visitors)

The Urahoro Coal Mine is the only remaining coal-mining site of its kind in the Tokachi region.

The mine opened in 1911 and closed in 1954. During its operation, it brought a large influx of people to the area and played an important role in Urahoro’s economic development.

At its peak, the mining community had its own public bathhouse, school, shops, hospital, and even a movie theater.

The coal mined here was transported to a coal mine in Kushiro, and the connection with Kushiro also influenced Urahoro’s food culture. Some local dishes, such as Tonkatsu Spaghetti and Green Soba (Yabu Soba), are examples of this influence.

The site is currently inaccessible due to road construction, but I hope these photos will give you a glimpse into Urahoro’s coal-mining history and what this place once looked like.
